What is a Topic Board?
Topic board is a paper based communication board made up of symbols or just text. It can be very helpful for children and youth with communication difficulties to clarify their message when the context is not known or can be used to initiate a conversation.
The communicator may be able to point directly or can be supported by their communication partner (i.e. “Are you telling me something about your friends?” etc.).
Topic boards may also include an alphabet board or numbers with directions such as “It starts with…” or “Begins with…” as well as symbols to help support when the message is not complete.(i.e. “Wait” or “I’m not done”).
